Why Straight Teeth Matter More Than You Think

Orthodontic treatment is about more than cosmetics. Crooked, crowded, or misaligned teeth are harder to brush and floss effectively, which increases your risk of cavities and gum disease. A misaligned bite (malocclusion) can cause uneven wear on your teeth, jaw pain, headaches, and difficulty chewing. Over time, these issues compound.

Straightening your teeth and correcting your bite solves all of these problems at once. You get a smile that looks better, functions better, and is easier to keep healthy for the rest of your life.

At K&E Family Dental, we evaluate orthodontic needs as part of our comprehensive dental care for patients of all ages. When treatment is recommended, we work with Dr. Henna Kim, an experienced, board-certified orthodontist in our referral network who treats patients from ages 8 to 80.

Orthodontic Treatment Options

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to straightening teeth. The right option depends on the complexity of your case, your lifestyle, your age, and your preferences. Here are the most common options available through our orthodontic network.

Traditional metal braces. Metal braces remain the most versatile and effective orthodontic treatment available. They can correct virtually any alignment or bite issue, from mild crowding to complex cases involving significant jaw discrepancies. Modern metal braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more efficient than the bulky brackets of the past. They’re the go-to option for children, teens, and adults with moderate to severe orthodontic needs.

Ceramic (clear) braces. Ceramic braces work the same way as metal braces but use tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in with your teeth. They’re a popular choice for adult patients and older teens who want the effectiveness of traditional braces with a less noticeable appearance. The brackets are slightly larger than metal and require more careful maintenance to avoid staining, but for many patients the cosmetic benefit is worth it.

Clear aligners (Invisalign and similar systems). Clear aligners use a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays to gradually shift your teeth into position. Each set of trays is worn for about two weeks before moving to the next set in the series. Aligners are nearly invisible when worn, can be removed for eating and brushing, and involve fewer office visits than braces. They work best for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and certain bite issues. More complex cases may still require traditional braces.

Early intervention (Phase 1 treatment). Some orthodontic problems are best addressed before all the permanent teeth have come in. Phase 1 treatment, typically started between ages 7 and 10, uses appliances like expanders or partial braces to guide jaw growth, create space for incoming teeth, and correct developing bite issues. Not every child needs early intervention, but for those who do, it can simplify or even eliminate the need for full braces later.

Retainers. After active treatment is complete, retainers hold your teeth in their new positions while the bone and tissue stabilize. Wearing your retainer as directed is essential to maintaining your results long-term. Options include removable retainers (clear or traditional wire) and permanent bonded retainers cemented behind the front teeth.

What to Expect from Orthodontic Treatment

Consultation. The process starts with a thorough evaluation, including X-rays, photographs, and impressions or digital scans of your teeth. Dr. Kim will assess your alignment, bite, and jaw relationship and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. You’ll know the recommended approach, estimated timeline, and cost before committing to anything.
Active treatment. Treatment length varies depending on the complexity of the case. Mild crowding with aligners might take 6 to 12 months. Moderate cases with braces typically take 12 to 18 months. More complex cases involving significant bite correction can take 18 to 24 months or longer. You’ll have regular check-in appointments (usually every 4 to 8 weeks) to monitor progress and make adjustments.
Retention. Once your teeth are in their final positions, you’ll transition to a retainer. This phase is just as important as the active treatment. Without a retainer, teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original positions, especially in the first year after braces or aligners are removed.
